While he was never exactly a household name, the talent of arranger, conductor, songwriter, and pianist Paul Weston was audible in quite a few households throughout much of the 20th century. And the box set, A LIFE, is most useful for the way it documents how that exceptional talent flourished in the Swing era and beyond. While Weston was one of the originators of instrumental mood music, he also provided distinctive arrangments for many of the best jazz and pop singers of the pre-rock years, including Lee Wiley, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, and especially his wife, Jo Stafford. There are wonderful examples of both styles in this thorough collection, along with contributions from jazz giants like guitarist Barney Kessel and trumeter Ziggy Elman.
