Don't be alarmed by the fact that the classic Glen Campbell tracks contained on this concise best-of set have been remixed--no dance beats have been added or anything, it just means they've been cleaned up a bit. The effect is that of a remastering job. That said, the tunes here are undoubtedly among the country-pop trailblazer's best, as he interprets gems by Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Lineman"), Allen Toussaint ("Southern Nights"), and others. Many of these are songs that defined '70s radio in the U.S., blurring the line between country and pop forever, and this hits package is an excellent way to bring them back to life.
Glen Campbell had already enjoyed success as a session guitarist and surrogate member of the Beach Boys when he scored his first big hit, "Gentle On My Mind," in 1967. In the following few years Campbell climbed the country and pop charts with a number of Jimmy Webb compositions, among them "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman." His career hit a second peak in the '70s, thanks in large part to the hit "Rhinestone Cowboy." In the '80s Campbell recorded a number of gospel albums as well.
