Performer: Roy Orbison
Producer: Jim Vienneau; Wesley Rose Distributor: Sony BMG Music (Canada) ( Notes: Roy Orbison came back for a third MGM album in 1966 and delivered Classic Roy, which was probably the best album be ever did for the label. Every song was cast in a familiar, classic Orbison vein, without any of the country piano sounds that showed a digression on recent releases, and most of it -- especially "Just Another Name for Rock and Roll" -- had a beat that was still highly appealing in mid-1966. Working more thoroughly within a band setting here, this is stripped-down, back-to-basics Orbison, maybe only lacking a hit single of the same obvious proportions as those Monument albums. Classic Roy was reissued in 2008 on Sony/BMG. ~ Bruce Eder & Al Campbell
Roy Orbison, a seminal rock & roll singer who initially recorded for the legendary Sun Records, created some of the most enduring hits of the 1950s and '60s. His near-operatic voice and dark, broken-hearted songs influenced a generation of artists. His songs and arrangements, almost symphonic in scope, set the template for pop sophistication in the early-to-mid-'60s. After a late-'80s comeback that included collaborations with Bono and Elvis Costello and a stint with the rock super-group the Travelling Wilburys, Orbison died of a heart attack in 1988.
