Performer: Elvis Presley
Producer: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen (Compilation) Distributor: Sony Music Entertainment Notes: Audio Remasterer: Vic Anesini. The four-disc I BELIEVE: THE GOSPEL MASTERS is the most comprehensive overview of Elvis Presley's gospel material ever assembled. The first three discs contain all of the inspirational material Elvis recorded in studio during his three-decades-plus career, while the fourth disc contains songs from his soundtracks and TV appearances, along with two legendary (and previously bootleg only) rehearsal tapes from 1966 and 1972. This is the last word on Elvis Presley's gospel side.
Record Collector (magazine) (p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Ultimately, the sacred songs became integral to Elvis' make-up, and he put more of his heart and soul into them than much of the throwaway pulp of the movie years."
"Before Elvis, there was nothing," John Lennon once said. An overstatement, of course, but Elvis Presley's ascendance to superstardom in the mid-1950s kicked off a musical and social revolution whose impact has yet to abate. After the charming young man from Tupelo, Mississippi was discovered by Sun Records honcho Sam Phillips, the wise studio owner took Presley under his wing, leading to the landmark recording of his first single, "That's All Right (Mama)." The rest, of course, is well-documented history, with Elvis going on to conquer the pop charts, the box office, and beyond. He truly was the King, and his blend of country, pop, and R&B became the cornerstone of rock & roll.
