Notes: Personnel: Steve Earle (vocals, guitar); Michael McAdam, Mike McAdam, Donnie Roberts (guitar); Bucky Baxter (steel guitar); Ken Moore (keyboards); Craig Wright, Harry Stinson (drums). Recording information: Manchester, England (04/16/1987/11/29/1988); Town & Country Club, London, England (04/16/1987/11/29/1988). Photographer: David Corio. This album documents a Steve Earle performance in London from 1988, when Earle was at his commercial peak, touring in support of his COPPERHEAD ROAD album. Accordingly, there are plenty of tunes from that album, including the title track and "The Devil's Right Hand," which mark a more rocking direction than he'd followed on his first two records (though those are also represented in the set). If anything, Earle's sound is even rougher and rowdier here than on COPPERHEAD ROAD.
Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Earle and his band The Dukes are in thundering form throughout. Muscular versions of Copperhead Road and The Devil's Right Hand slot nicely alongside delicately wrought country weepers 'Someday' and 'My Old Friend The Blues.'" Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he real find for fans is his take on the Irish traditional 'When Will We Be Married?'..."
Steve Earle did for country in the 1980s what Waylon Jennings did for it in the '70s--released it from the shackles of commerciality and overproduction by introducing a bad-ass, rock-friendly outlaw aesthetic. Besides his talents as a singer/songwriter, Earle is a producer/entrepreneur who's worked with many other artists (some on his own label) and helped foster a new wave of progressive country. He's also a dedicated political activist who's done much for a variety of progressive causes.
