Audio Mixer: Mike Shipley. Audio Remasterer: Ted Jensen. With METAMORPHOSIS, its fifth major-label studio outing, the former nu-metal ensemble Papa Roach aims to reinforce the notion that it is a straightforward hard-rock group, a point hit home by the album's heavily posed cover photo. While the band is content to compete with bands such as Hinder and Nickelback (see the soaring anthem "Lifeline"), it's also not afraid to contemplate the perils of a hedonistic lifestyle, as on the moral-minded mid-tempo "Hollywood Whore." Papa Roach also manages to unveil a few power ballads (most notably the emotive "Carry Me"), a move that may further discourage any lingering fans of its rap-metal era, but please the rock-radio masses.
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[I]t's a record that occasionally reveals not only change but a new-found spirit and determination....Jacoby Shaddix produces an occasionally brilliant performance, adding character and passion to songs such as `Carry Me'..."
These Vacaville, CA boys first got together in high school, influenced by the likes of Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More, they constructed their own rap-metal hybrid. Papa Roach was no overnight success; they toured relentlessly, building up a loyal fanbase and releasing two independent albums and two EPs before finally signing to a major label for their 2000 release INFEST. The album soared into the top of the charts, and brought the band's hard-hitting nu-metal sound to a whole new audience. The group proved to be more than a one-shot, as their follow-ups, 2002's LOVEHATETRAGEDY and 2004's GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER, were similarly successful.
