In the 1950's, while many big band leaders were scaling back (or in some cases preparing for major comebacks), Stan Kenton's career was at a high point. He still led a very popular and creative big band and also hosted a musical variety show on television. Kenton wasn't shy about sharing the spotlight with major talents--the show (and, consequently, this disc) featured giants of jazz and pop music of the era like singers Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Williams, fellow big band icon Count Basie, bop originator Dizzy Gillespie, sax demigod Coleman Hawkins, and then-cutting-edge bop musicians Jimmy Raney and Oscar Petttiford. This is less a Kenton album than a valuable time capsule of classic American music.
