Notes: Audio Remasterer: Chris Gehringer. RE: GENERATIONS pays homage to legendary vocalist Nat King Cole with a series of remixes and unique cover versions by a host of 21st-century pop, rock, R&B, and hip-hop artists. The Roots, TV on the Radio, Nas, will i. am, Just Blaze, and Cee-Lo are only a few of the luminaries to dust off Cole's classic tunes and reinvent them for a new generation. The album's remixes allow listeners to hear Cole's original voice taking part in the proceedings too, most notably on "Straighten Up and Fly Right," on which Natalie Cole duets with her late father. This bold and creative project serves the double purpose of keeping Nat King Cole relevant to the younger generation while proving that his music is timeless.
Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "[A] tribute album more tasteful than most....On 'Nature Boy,' TV on the Radio even make a convincing case for the King's place among art-rock royalty." -- Grade: B+ Mojo (Publisher) (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here are some very imaginative reworkings, especially Cee-Lo's funky 'Lush Life' deconstruction."
One of the seminal performers in 20th-century American music, Nat "King" Cole was a major figure in the development of jazz piano, the stylistic link between early jazz and pop of the sophisticated urban variety that emerged in the '30s, and finally one of the greatest pop singers of his day. Cole was a hugely talented, intensely musical singer, blessed with almost flawless good taste, who became an international superstar capable of appealing to audiences across all boundaries.
