Performer: Merzbow
Distributor: NAIL Distribution Notes: Into his third decade as the undisputed "King of Noise," Masami Akita's (Merzbow) activities as an internationally-acclaimed experimental musician, sound artist, author, and activist show no signs of flagging. 13 JAPANESE BIRDS VOL. 1 is Merzbow's inaugural release in a 13 volume monthly series ending in February 2010. Inspired by French composer and ornithologist Oliver Messiaen's collection of 13 works for piano inspired by birdsong, CATALOG D'OISEAUX (1958), Akita wrests twisted, alien textures from analog electronics that, indeed, at times mimic the avian inspirations that so captivated the Frenchman.
Merzbow, aka Masami Akita, is one of the most important figures in the Japanese noise music movement. Releasing an astounding amount of work since the early 1980s, Merzbow's sound is a brutal amalgamation of electronically generated screeches, squeals, and drones that while certainly not accessible in any traditional sense is often beautifully entrancing in its unrelenting brutality. Skewing convention on every creative level, Merzbow released the enormous 50-CD box set MERZBOX in 2000.
