Notes: Recording information: Duck Kee Studios (07/23/1999); Overdub Lane (07/23/1999). Frontman Mac McCaughan has a slightly aged rasp, but his iconic indie rock band is in classic form from the opening riff of barn-burner "Learned To Surf." Things get even more reminiscent of their classic 1991 LP ON THE MOUTH during the tambourine-led fervor of "Misfits & Mistakes." "Screw It Up" and "Knock Knock Knock" have the mid-tempo-verse-meets-propulsive-chorus formula that worked so well on mid-'90s classics like FOOLISH, while things close out with the immediate nostalgia of an acoustic "Surf." They took nearly a decade off, but LEAVES gives fans the most inspired Chunk tunes since INDOOR LIVING.

Perhaps the quintessential US indie band of the 1990s, Superchunk picked up where '80s acts like Husker Du and the Replacements left off, at the intersection of pop and punk, adding a '90s twist and defining a new generation of alternative rock. Led by Mac McCaughan, the band released a string of albums whose punky power and melodic bent provide fodder for a subsequent generation of punk-pop and emo bands. On top of all that, the label Superchunk started, Merge, became one of the most important indie-rock sources of the era, hosting the Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr., Lambchop, the Magnetic Fields, and countless others.
