We Bid You Goodnight
Performer: Grateful Dead
Engineer: Bill Candelario Producer: David Lemieux; Grateful Dead; Jeffrey Norman Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Personnel: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar); Phil Lesh (vocals, electric bass); Donna Jean Godchaux, Bob Weir (vocals); Keith Godchaux (keyboards); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Liner Note Author: Dennis McNally. Recording information: Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA (11/09/1973-11/11/1973). Photographers: Gary Manasse; Bruce Polonsky; Mary Ann Mayer. Arranger: Grateful Dead. The second in a continuing series of complete concert stand box sets (the first being the FILLMORE WEST 1969 box), WINTERLAND 1973: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS finds the legendary noodlers energized by home cooking with a three-night stand at San Francisco's famous Winterland Ballroom in November 1973. The nine-disc/72-track whopper features almost every single song from each concert (the one omission is the first night's encore--played when the tape machines weren't running), shows that capped a cherry era for the band. Keith and Donna Godchaux (on piano and vocals respectively) were gelling as the line-up's newcomers, WAKE OF THE FLOOD was a hot seller, and the group's spry bluegrass-psych picking and nebulous grooviness reached an apex. Each show was recorded onto two-track by Dead crew stalwart Kidd Candelario and stellarly remastered for the digital age by Jeffrey Norman. A "Dark Star" that clocks in at 35:41 minutes is among the countless highlights here--a must-own for serious Dead Heads--although daunted neophytes should know: this set is long, but it stands with EUROPE '72 as one of the best live documents of the Dead in the early '70s.
The Grateful Dead were right there at the birth of the 1960s West Coast psychedelic scene, but they handily incorporated simple folk, blues, and country sounds into their swirling, jam-oriented style. With an endless touring schedule and a huge following of devoted fans, the group fueled hippie visions well into the '90s and sparked the jam-band movement that would eventually fill the void left by the dearly departed Grateful Dead after the passing of guitarist Jerry Garcia. Since Garcia's passing, surviving members of the band have participated in various musical projects, including a reunion tour in 2003 under the shortened name of "the Dead."
