Recorded in the mid-'70s, Livetime features live-in-concert versions of Hall & Oates' songs, with the group trying to replicate its polished studio sound, a sound that is a big part of the duo's success. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine A lackluster album recorded in the mid-'70s, Livetime proves that part of the success of Hall & Oates' singles lies in the studio, where they can carefully craft both the song and its presentation. In concert, many of the same songs fall flat, as the group tries to replicate its polished studio sound to little avail. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The pre-eminent white soul duo of the 1970s and '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates ruled pop radio for years with their hook-ridden hits. The pair eventually moved beyond their initial inspirations--primarily Motown groups like the Temptations and Philly soul artists like Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes--and incorporated pop, rock and disco into a sound that managed to be both commercial and soulful.
