Performer: Gin Blossoms
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel: Robin Wilson (vocals); Jesse Valenzuela, Scotty Johnson (guitar); Bill Leen (bass guitar); Scotty Kusmirek (drums). Audio Mixer: Jesse Valenzuela. Recording information: North Lawrence, OH (07/18/2008). The Gin Blossoms' first-ever live album, LIVE IN CONCERT, finds the reunited aughts version of the group in energetic form, delivering a mix of their `90s hits and new material in front of an enthusiastic audience. It's a testament to the strength and consistency of the band's trademark alternative rock-meets-power-pop songwriting that MAJOR LODGE VICTORY-era songs such as "Learning the Hard Way" and "Fool For the Taking" sit so perfectly right alongside radio classics "Hey Jealousy" and "Follow You Down." Throughout, the band sounds tight and focused, even on an unexpected cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man."
Defiantly waving the flag of power pop and jangly guitar rock at the height of the grunge movement, the Gin Blossoms proved to be an unlikely pop success in the mid 1990s. The band's 1992 breakthrough, NEW MISERABLE EXPERIENCE, produced several charting hits, including the jangle-pop classic "Hey Jealousy." Tragedy struck the band when principal songwriter and founder Doug Hopkins committed suicide in 1993. The rest of the band persevered, however, and continued to tour and record into the new millennium.
