To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Hawkwind
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel: Dave Brock (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Alan Davey (vocals, keyboards, bass instrument); Richard Chadwick (drum). Fans and collectors have often bootlegged the Hawkwind performance that took place at the Reading Festival in 1992. Given this, the band decided to issue it themselves "officially" via the internet. The online presentation was a bit strange, as the cover image -- as well as that of Minneapolis 1989 -- appeared to present these as DVDs rather than as double-CDs. The lineup is the classic three-piece of the 1990s with Dave Brock, Alan Davey, and Richard Chadwick holding down the fort; Harvey Bainbridge had left already. The material features much classic material, and some rather obscure moments as well. The version of "Space Dust" is quite good, as is the closing "Masters of the Universe," and the long reading of "Hassan I Sabah." The one questionable thing is sound and price in relation to it. These are not CD-quality recordings. They may or may not be soundboard tapes. And while every instrument can be heard on them, they still sound more like decent bootlegs than bona fide artifacts assembled with any real care by the band. The truth of the matter is, if you are a collector of Hawkwind bootlegs, what you have may already be as good as what's here. ~ Thom Jurek
Inspired equally by the hippie lifestyle/marathon jamming of the '60s West Coast bands and the interstellar excursions of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind helped invent "space rock" as we know it today. Through countless albums and personnel shifts, they've continued to combine heavy rock with science fiction in a futuristic setting, inspiring a generation of bands and several international space-rock festivals.
