Notes: The contemporary jazz singer Karrin Allyson is perhaps the most confident and versatile of the new vocalists. Enjoying a long and stable association with Concord Records, she seems to have filled the vacumn left by the suicide of Suzannah McCorkle in 2001, both for the label and for contemporary jazz singing in general. Less a composer songbook scholar than McCorkle, she has nonetheless ranged far and wide with album projects that have explored French and Brazilian song (FROM PARIS TO RIO, IMAGINA), contemporary singer-songwriters (WILD ABOUT YOU), pure jazz composition (FOOTPRINTS), and jazz icons (the exceptional BALLADS: REMEMBERING JOHN COLTRANE). These albums and more are duly represented on BY REQUEST: THE BEST OF KARRIN ALLYSON, a well-produced 2009 compilation from Concord. The album's title is not just a figure of speech as the tunes heard here owe their selection to frequent requests by appreciative club audiences all over the country. Consequently, Allison's very first (self-released) 1993 album, I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, is given the nod by the inclusion of "Nature Boy" as is her "hit," download-favorite "Cherokee" from 1996's COLLAGE. A special bonus is the beautiful last track, "Next Time Around (Soultrane)," a previously unreleased interpretation of yet another John Coltrane ballad.
