Performer: Eels

A concept album about werewolves looking for love in all the wrong places may elicit groans from many music fans. However, if any artist can pull it off without veering into the silly or absurdly pretentious, a good bet would be the critically lauded Mark Oliver Everett, driving force behind the Eels. HOMBRE LOBO (2009), when sincere to the lupine theme, as on the howling barroom brimstone of opening track "Prizefighter" and centerpiece "Fresh Blood," is laced with some of the most ferocious, most Jon Spencer-esque rock Everett's ever dispensed. However, he is not above diverging from the path, and it's the quieter moments, the neurotic, intelligent pop (on which the Eels mostly made their name), that shine on HOMBRE LOBO, particularly the delicate strummings of "The Look You Give That Guy" and "In My Dreams."
Spin (p.90) - "Mark Oliver Everett takes his latest album title quite literally, unleashing predatory howls over distortion-ridden stompers like 'Fresh Blood'..."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "For every howling rocker there's a ballad backed with skipping drums and delicious counter melodies."
Singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett started out under the moniker A Man Called E, releasing two albums of dark, melodic pop in the early 1990s. After forming Eels and signing to a new label, Everett's work became even darker, and the production became more textural and sophisticated. Aside from a quirky, experimental 2003 effort under the name MC Honky, Everett has continued to refine his emotionally uncompromising, skillfully crafted vision with Eels, often to great critical acclaim if not stunning sales.
