Notes: Originally released in 2008 in Europe, this is an American edition that adds an extra track. Although Ute Lemper first made her name in the German art-song tradition exemplified by Kurt Weill, BETWEEN YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW is her first album of entirely self-penned songs. With influences ranging from Weill and one-time collaborator Elvis Costello to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Jeff Buckley, Lemper has created a sometimes prickly song cycle of tunes that tend to the grim. Highlights include the September 11 reverie "September Mourn" and the even darker "Ghosts of Berlin."
German chanteuse Ute Lemper is something of a renaissance woman. In addition to her successful recording career, she's known for her work in films and theater. Musically, the cabaret-rooted singer started out interpreting the songs of her primary influences, Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, and Kurt Weill. By 2000 Lemper had crossed over to the pop world, releasing albums with material by the likes of Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, and Tom Waits, and collaborating with Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy) and Laurie Anderson.
