To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Frank Sinatra
Producer: Charles Pigone (Compilation); Frank Collura (Compilation) Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Audio Remasterer: David McEowen. Liner Note Author: Frank Sinatra, Jr. After his initial teen-angel stardom gave way to a mid-career slump, Frank Sinatra signed with Capitol Records in 1953, and saw his star rise once again. This second volume of his Capitol hits retrospective is a filler-free string of classics, including a previously unreleased version of "This Can't Be Love." A sequel to Capitol's 2000 Classic Sinatra, 2009's Classic Sinatra II rounds up another 20 tracks from Sinatra's seminal '50s recordings for Capitol, adding the previously unreleased (and just fine) "This Can't Be Love" as mild collector bait. This, of course, isn't for diehards who have the classic concept albums that provide the source material for this set; this is for casual fans who want highlights -- highlights like "Too Marvelous for Words," "Love and Marriage," "(Love Is) The Tender Trap," "Moonlight in Vermont," "High Hopes," and "I've Got a Crush on You." By and large, these songs aren't quite as well known as those on the first collection, which did an excellent job of offering up all the biggest Capitol hits from Frank, but that's hardly a slight on the quality of the music here, as it's all superb, a terrific companion volume to Classic Sinatra for those listeners who, for whatever reason, don't wish to dig into the actual albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
An icon of American music, Frank Sinatra defined sophisticated pop singing of the post-war era and spent more than 50 years in the limelight. After formative stints with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and others, Sinatra shot to worldwide fame through hit records and Hollywood movies. His hip, laid-back delivery defined cool, yet he also had a down-to-earth manner that connected easily with audiences. Ups and downs would follow him throughout his career--the details of his private life were not always fit for public consumption--but right up till the end, every comeback strengthened the intense loyalty of his fans.
