In 2009, the Broadway classic WEST SIDE STORY got a major facelift, courtesy of director (and librettist) Arthur Laurents. He added Spanish to both the dialogue and the lyrics, fitting for a musical about inter-cultural tensions, and toughened up the characters to reflect the contemporary state of the inner city. The reinvigorated work is a revelation that will have listeners paying fresh attention to songs that long ago entered the pop canon. Argentinian actress/singer Josefina Scaglione shines especially bright as the voice of Maria.
