Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Liner Note Author: Clive Anderson. The U.K. Charly label is no stranger to Sun Records, and rockabilly in particular, but they strive to be a little different with SUN ROCKABILLY MELTDOWN, a three-CD, 107-track box released in 2009. Instead of showcasing the most famous R&R hits yet again, each CD is programmed like an afficianado's radio show, featuring such little known but rocking artists such as Tracy Pendarvis, Hayden Thompson, and Malcom Yelvington in addition to less familiar cuts from Elvis, Jerry Lee ("Milkshake Mademoiselle"?), Carl, Johnny, and the rest, including alternate versions and covers of each other's hits, like Charlie Rich doing "Blue Suede Shoes." It's still a thoughtful set overall, not just obscurities for obscurities sake--milestones like "Mystery Train" and "Flying Saucers Rock n' Roll" are here--but the emphasis is definitely on teasing out the unusual and novel in a still-fresh to-be-discovered catalogue.
Record Collector (magazine) (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[W]ith 70 very acceptable contenders that live up to the superlatives in the title."
