Performer: Original Soundtrack/Aaron Zigman
Distributor: Alternative Dis. Alliance Notes: To underscore the rich emotional content of the 2009 family drama My Sister's Keeper, music supervisor Erin Scully assembles a soundtrack heavy on lush, midtempo folk-pop (Pete Yorn, James Blunt) with the occasional odd touch courtesy of some eccentric yet appropriate covers: E.G. Daily's wry and sultry version of "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries" has a knowing undercurrent that preserves all the charm but half the innocence of the original; Jimmy Scott's sublime reading of Talking Heads' "Heaven" is an under-heard gem; Greg Laswell's take on "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" revises the bubbly '80s classic as an earnest piano ballad. Most valuable here is a previously unreleased Jeff Buckley recording of Elton John's "We All Fall in Love Sometimes." A spare jazz arrangement for electric guitar and voice mines the ambivalence and despair at the core of the lyrics and transforms the song into a mournful, chills-inducing wail. ~ Paula Carino
