Performer: Def Leppard
Artist: Hothouse Flowers
Distributor: Universal Distribution

Notes: Def Leppard: Joe Elliot (vocals); Phil Collen (cockney rap vocals, guitar); Rick "Sav" Savage (guitar, bass); Rick Allen (drums). Additional personnel: Phil Nicholas (keyboards); The Sideways Mob (background vocals). Recorded in Holland and Eire. Released nearly five years after the world-dominating, multi-platinum success of HYSTERIA, Def Leppard's ADRENALIZE was a poor candidate for success. Surprisingly, considering it emerged in the wake of both the grunge explosion and the alcohol-related death of Leppard lead guitarist Steve Clark, the album topped the charts. Hits like "Let's Get Rocked" and "Stand Up" delivered the same combination of fist pounding arena rock and smooth power balladry that characterized the group's biggest hits, but with an even slicker sheen. The last of Def Leppard's Mutt Lange-produced efforts, ADRENALIZE brought one chapter of the group's history to a close, setting the stage for the stripped-down sound of the follow-up, 1996's SLANG.
Rolling Stone (4/16/92, p.79) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...A perfect Def Leppard album...[Def Leppard's] songs have become mini-masterpieces of aural impact...one of the catchiest bands in rock..." Entertainment Weekly (4/10/92, p.60) - "...they continue to deliver a voluptuous sound..." - Rating: B Q (1/93, p.71) - Included in Q's list of the 50 Best Albums Of 1992. Q (5/92, p.73) - 3 Stars - Good - "...ADRENALIZE sounds like another commercial monster..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Opener 'Let's Get Rocked' is a stone-cold classic....Elsewhere, there's lush balladry in 'Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad'..."
Before Def Leppard, heavy metal was associated with leather, studs, and motorcycles. After a pair of mega-platinum albums in the '80s, Leppard proved that pop hooks, hard rock, and good looks could equal massive success, hatching a slew of imitators in the process. Despite numerous setbacks such as drummer Rick Allen losing an arm in an accident, followed by the death of guitarist Steve Clark, the British band persevered, achieving even more popularity. Though they inspired legions of hair metal bands, their longevity is a testament to their enduring musical legacy.
