Performer: Buddy Guy
Engineer: Ron Albert; Richard Oulleppe
Distributor: WEA (Distributor)

Notes: Personnel: Buddy Guy (vocals, guitar); Junior Wells (vocals, harmonica); J. Geils (guitar); Eric Clapton (guitar, bottleneck guitar); Magic Dick (harmonica); A.C. Reed (tenor saxophone); Dr. John, Mike Utley, Seth Justman (piano); Carl Radle, Leroy Stewart, Danny Klein (bass); Roosevelt Shaw, Jim Gordon, Stephen Bladd (drums). Producers: Eric Clapton, Ahmet Ertegun, Tom Dowd, Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida and Intermedia Studios, Boston. Massechusetts. Considering the troubled background of this album (Eric Clapton, Ahmet Ertegun, and Tom Dowd only ended up with eight tracks at a series of 1970 sessions in Miami; two years later, the J. Geils Band was brought in to cut two additional songs to round out the long-delayed LP for 1972 release), the results were pretty impressive. Buddy Guy contributes dazzling lead axe to their revival of "T-Bone Shuffle"; Junior Wells provides a sparkling remake of Sonny Boy's "My Baby She Left Me," and Guy is entirely credible in a grinding Otis Redding mode on the Southern soul stomper "A Man of Many Words." ~ Bill Dahl
Q (9/93, p.98) - 3 Stars - Good - "...[PLAY THE BLUES] is valuable stuff..."
Eric Clapton once called Buddy Guy "the greatest blues guitarist ever." Guy, along with contemporary Magic Sam, took the sounds of Chicago blues of the 1950s and ratcheted them up a notch, in the process creating a new form of controlled blues mayhem. Born in Louisiana, he moved to Chicago as a young man in 1957 and served an apprenticeship with Chicago blues king Muddy Waters while getting his own solo career underway. Guy's frequent collaborations with harmonica player Junior Wells are among his best work.
