Performer: Mott the Hoople
Distributor: RED Distribution Notes: Anticipation is always high for any posthumous Mott the Hoople live material. This set on the Airline label seems to be a compilation of live odds and sods rather than a complete live gig. The scant sleeve notes on the back of this particularly dubious package claim that "it is the songwriting and vocals of Ian Hunter and the solid guitar playing of Mick Ralphs that fans remember today about Mott the Hoople. There's plenty of that here and then some!" That last sentence is what provides some troubling information, even if unintentionally. Ralphs' own vocal performance on "Ready for Love" is substandard; Hunter's on "Thunderbuck Ram" and "Whiskey Women" are also just awful. Those complaints aside, two-thirds of this is tough, hard-working Mott live with the "All the Young Dudes" and "All the Way to Memphis" and "One of the Boys" (the album's first three tracks) being the strongest material here, though the performances of "Sucker" and "Sweet Angeline" are also excellent. ~ Thom Jurek
While most rock fans remember Mott The Hoople as a thriving early-'70s glam band, they were also one of the first British bands to serve as a mouthpiece for the working class (predating both The Sex Pistols and The Clash by several years). Led by singer Ian Hunter and future Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs, Mott could rock out and pose with the best of 'em.
