There are very few frills to Fabolous's style; the NYC rapper merely spits witty rhymes over bouncy, dance-floor-ready beats out of the P. Diddy school. On his fourth studio album (second for Def Jam), 2009's LOCO'S WAY, the sprawl-drawled MC continues to provide the world with Summery jams like its debut single, "My Time." A concept album from a punch line rapper is an unattractive proposition, so it's fortunate that LOSO'S WAY strays off topic even more than Jay-Z's AMERICAN GANGSTER. Named after Fabolous' own feature film - made available in a limited-edition version of the album - LOSO'S WAY is inspired by the Al Pacino vehicle Carlito's Way. Other than a track named after the character "Pachanga" plus a couple other references within the rhymes, this is actually a standard issue Fabolous album with big singles, plenty of laugh-out-loud lyrics, and the usual fun redundancy.
XXL (Magazine Publisher) (pp.107-108) - "Fab sticks to what works: sugary tracks that feature R&B acts, such as Ryan Leslie, Jeremih and Ne-Yo....It is Fab's masterful punch lines that remain his calling card."
While Fabolous's style is all about flash, there's nothing particularly showy, unique, or groundbreaking about the NYC rapper's game; however, with a knack for bringing out the best in some of hip-hop's top producers and a flow that is consistently, comfortably solid, Fabolous rose to become one of the '00s masters of the hip-hop jam. Singles like 2001's "Can't Deny It" and 2004's "Breathe" featured the MC's swaggering, dragging drawl over hook-heavy Bad Boy-style beats, and soared to the upper portions of both the rap and pop charts.
