When the Black Crowes' first album appeared in early 1990, it was a record out of time--a rootsy, swaggering, Stones-meets-Faces rock & roll disc released at the height of hair metal mania. Nearly two decades later, the band had built a substantial catalog and become hailed as one of rock's most exciting live acts, yet remained as artistically uncompromising as ever. It's perhaps no surprise, then, that the group decided to record BEFORE THE FROST and its accompanying album UNTIL THE FREEZE live in the studio in front of a small audience of devoted fans over the course of just five nights. The results are suitably rough n' ready, and finds the band matching classic rock influences (as on "I Ain't Hiding," which recalls the Stones BLACK & BLUE era) with its own trademark shambling southern rock vibe.
Rolling Stone (p.78) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "FREEZE is a set of American beauties that flow from spacey bluegrass to good-time boogie and pensive country folk."
Billboard (p.28) - "[O]pener 'Good Morning Captain' rides a roadhouse-worthy slide-guitar groove, while gorgeous harmonies enrich a cover of the Stephen Stills/Chris Hillman gem 'So Many Times.'"
Q (Magazine) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[O]pener 'Good Morning Captain' adds bluegrass infusions to the band's spliff-infused blues, while 'I Ain't Hiding' brings the funk..."
Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, The Black Crowes put blues and raunch back into rock at a time when the genre was nearly blues-less. Taking their cue from the Faces and the early-'70s Rolling Stones, the Crowes fought, partied and rocked through the 1990s, achieving big success with their retro-rock sound and look.
