Liner Note Author: George Benson . Photographer: Greg Allen. George Benson's sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it's quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements-his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. SONGS AND STORIES doesn't deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn't have to. He's chosen ten ubiquitous pop tunes from a variety of songwriters (and one by a relatively new kid on the block), and with the help of producers John Burk and Marcus Miller, he puts them across in fine style.
JazzTimes (p.54) - "[T]ypically compelling. Lamont Dozier wrote the sublime `Living in High Definition,' another effortless Benson gem with wonderful scatting."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t features some strong vocal cuts and also a couple of lovely guitar-led instrumentals."
George Benson's success as a pop performer has perhaps overshadowed his status as a jazz artist, but beneath the glossy exterior is a guitarist of the highest rank. Similar to his role model, Wes Montgomery, Benson made his mark in the mid 1960s as a hard-swinging guitarist before venturing into lushly produced pop-jazz that showcased his talents in a more radio-friendly setting. Despite the aesthetic departure, Benson remains an artist with a highly individual style.
