Performer: The Pointer Sisters
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Recording for a variety of labels, including Blue Thumb, Planet, and RCA, the Pointer Sisters had a string of notable hits in the late 1970s and early '80s, most of which are assembled here. At 14 tracks, this set doesn't get into a whole lot of depth, but the essential commercial high points are represented with songs like their 1973 revival of Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can," Bruce Springsteen's "Fire," "Automatic," "Neutron Dance," "Slow Hand," "I'm So Excited," "Dare Me," "He's So Shy," and "Jump (For My Love)." A few things are missing, like "Everybody Is a Star," for instance, but most of the career high points are present, and the result is a pretty fair portrait of the commercial side of this exciting and versatile singing group. ~ Steve Leggett
R&B vocal quartet the Pointer Sisters have had a career marked by amazing versatility and perseverance. Sporting a distinct retro look, they became the first black female group to perform on the Grand Old Opry, and won a Best Country Grammy in 1975 with "Fairytale." They scored a major pop hit in 1978 with the Bruce Springsteen-penned "Fire," and had several hits in the 1980s that included the irresistible dance/pop classic "I'm So Excited" and "Jump (For My Love)"--the latter won a Grammy in 1984. While the Sisters never again achieved the success they had in the '70s and '80s, they remained a viable touring act in the decades that followed. Sadly, June Pointer, the youngest of the group, succumbed to cancer in 2006.
