Notes: While he has oft had a tendency towards believing too much of his own early hype and trying to get by on lazy rhymes, when he's on his game, Beanie Sigel can bring some of the most clever, tight lyrics in hip-hop. Prior to the release of THE BROAD STREET BULLY, Beanie fiercely worked the mixtape circuit, rehabbing his reputation, perhaps rediscovering his art and refining his flow. The album starts slow, but by the melancholy, borderline-horror rap of "Tear Drops," it's clear that Beanie's come to the mic with fire in his eyes. THE BROAD STREET BULLY, if it doesn't finally fulfill the promise he's held for years, at the very least proves Beanie Sigel deserved his early press.
One of the most infamous figures in Philadelphia's hip-hop scene, Beanie Sigel is the leader of the State Property Crew, which in addition to spawning several successful MCs also features a clothing line and has produced several feature films. Sigel, who made a name for himself with gritty street narratives and a rep to back them up, was one of the first acts signed to Jay-Z and Damon Dash's Roc-A-Fella label, releasing his debut, THE TRUTH, in 1999. Constant feuds with numerous rappers (including former bossman Jigga), troubles with the law, and subsequent jail time stalled Sigel's promising career several times, yet he remains a strong chart presence with each album he is able to release.
