Performer: Various Artists/Nick Cave
Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: The first thing that should be noted about Nick Cave's Jukebox is that he is nowhere on the recording. Issued by the Chrome Dreams imprint, this 23-song collection is correctly subtitled "The Songs That Inspired the Man." What's included is a slew of tracks that run from covers he recorded or performed to those he was merely drawn to. There is a live 1979 version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody," a live reading of the classic "Man in Black" by Johnny Cash, and the Everly Brothers' version of the traditional ballad "Down in the Willow Garden" (an inspiration -- according to CD compilation producer Derek Barker -- for Cave's "Where the Wild Roses Grow"). Along the way there are blues songs from the obscure to the well-known, from "Grinder Man Blues" by Memphis Slim to Blind Willie Johnson's "I'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge." Tunes by the Pogues, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Little Willie John, Leroy Carr, and Tex Ritter also make the cut. As an academic listen it's interesting -- especially if one reads Derek Barker's liner notes. As an aesthetic one, it works even better; hearing these songs assembled together simply as a collection of iconic music from the 20th century is reward in and of itself. ~ Thom Jurek
