Performer: INXS
Distributor: Source UK (UK) Notes: The Years 1979-1997 is the Australian counterpart to Rhino's Shine Like It Does. Like Shine Like It Does, The Years is an elaborately packaged anthology with extensive liner notes and just over 40 tracks chronologically spread across two discs. There is only a slight difference between the two selection-wise; for instance, this has "By My Side" and "Shining Star" instead of earlier tracks "We Are the Vegetables" and "Simple Simon." And, of course, it wouldn't be a retrospective without a couple sops to completists: two previously unreleased outtakes, "Tight" and "Salvation Jane," originate, respectively, from Welcome to Wherever You Are and X. Two discs are hardly excessive for a group who notched 38 Top 40 hits in their home country. ~ Andy Kellman
Like many groups that achieved mainstream success in the 1980s, Australia's INXS was kinetically inspired by the British punk scene. Led by charismatic singer Michael Hutchence and the musically gifted Farriss brothers, INXS began as a new-wave rock band, but by the mid-'80s they hit on a global level with an accessible, streamlined dance-rock sound. For most people, the band's saga ended with Hutchence's tragic suicide in 1997. In 2005, however, the band went in search of a new lead singer via the AMERICAN IDOL-style reality-TV series ROCKSTAR, eventually choosing Canadian J.D. Fortune. The revamped INXS released SWITCH in 2005 and toured the world in support of it that same year.
