Notes: The soundtrack for season three of Showtime's Californication offers up a nice balance of old and new, but like any TV or film-based compilation of songs, the lack of a visual aid results in a fairly schizophrenic listening experience where you're forced to compartmentalize both the works of country-folk crooner Jimmy LaFave and feces-throwing punk legend G.G. Allin. That is to say, it doesn't sit well when digested in a single setting. However, taken in bits and pieces, songs like indie pop outfit Blind Pilot's amiable "3 Rounds and a Sound" and tonsured garage rock legends the Monks' impossibly catchy "Boys Are Boys and Girls Are Choice" are quite delicious, especially when consumed after Austin-based Stax revivalist Black Joe Lewis' genius barroom audio valentine "B*tch, I Love You." ~ James Christopher Monger
