Deep into R&B and trained on the trumpet, Lonnie Smith jumped straight into the organ without the usual primer of studies on the piano. From the early '70s on, he has been a practitioner of the greasy yet comfortable organ-groove funk that is at the very heart of what came to be known as "acid jazz."
