After the disappointment of their unfocused 1992 self-titled release, King's X unleashed their heaviest release yet two years later. DOGMAN sounded as if the trio had been reborn--they hadn't rocked this convincingly since the dawn of the '90s. Produced by Brendan "Pearl Jam" O'Brien, DOGMAN benefits from straight ahead sound and more focused songwriting (especially when compared to its predessor). The biting title track remains one of the band's best and hardest-hitting rockers, while other standouts include "Shoes," "Fool You," "Complain," and the more low-key "Cigarettes." Unquestionably, DOGMAN is a quintessential King's X release.
Q (2/94, p.93) - 3 Stars - Good - "...boasts a finely-tuned musical understanding and enough psychedelic sideswipes to impress..."
Power trio King's X combine Beatlesque melodies with fierce hard rock and progressive leanings. Formed in the mid-1980s, the band emerged--along with Living Colour--as one of the few metal bands with an African-American frontman. The group's initial videos garnered MTV airplay, leading to increased exposure and lengthy tours. Since the early '90s, King's X has maintained a slightly lower profile, but they still have a very devoted following, eager for the next release to feature the band's genre-hopping sound.
