Performer: The Mission UK (UK)
Producer: Joe Gibb; John Paul Jones; Mark Saunders; Andy Partridge; The Mission UK; Tim Palmer; Wayne Hussey Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: SUM AND SUBSTANCE is packaged with a 12-page booklet containing photos and essays from the Mission biography, "NAMES ARE FOR TOMBSTONES, BABY." Audio Mixer: Mark "Spike" Stent. Audio Remixer: Mark "Spike" Stent. Recording information: Jacobs Studio, Surrey, England (07/1986-04/1993); Manor, Oxfordshire, England (07/1986-04/1993); Rak Studios, London, England (07/1986-04/1993); Ridge Farm, Surrey, England (07/1986-04/1993); Wapley Barn, Herefordshire, England (07/1986-04/1993). A solid collection of the Mission's best from their years at Mercury (1986-1994), featuring excellent remixes of "Beyond the Pale" and "Like a Child Again." The only thing lacking here are the stellar tracks from their Chapter 22 Records days -- "Serpents Kiss," "Crystal Ocean," and "Garden of Delight" -- which leaves the more devoted fan wishing for a more sizable collection. This is a fine overview, however, and it's nice to have all of the great singles in one place. ~ Chris True
Known as the Mission U.K. stateside to avoid confusion with a similarly named Philly soul band, The Mission formed in 1985 when singer Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams strayed from goth mainstays Sisters of Mercy. Plying a just slightly more melodic, but still ferocious, brand of dark-tinged rock, the band swiftly became a live phenomenon. The four-piece were also regulars on the U.K. pop and U.S. modern rock charts through the late-`80s and early-`90s with enduring hits like "Wasteland" and "Deliverance."
