Notes: Personnel: Ian Hunter (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Mick Ralphs, Andy York (vocals, guitar); Steve Holley (vocals, drums); Ian Gibbons (keyboards). Recording information: London. Great American Music Company's 2010 CD Live in London is a retitled and truncated re-release of the 2004 show at the London Astoria previously released as the Just Another Night DVD and the CD entitled The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nuthin' But the Truth. It's a show that's seen so many releases because it deserves it: Hunter was supported by a crackerjack band featuring his old Mott the Hoople running mate Mick Ralphs, and they ran through a set of hits with a vigor that belies their age. If you already happen to own one of the previous releases, the bonus track of an acoustic version of "All the Young Dudes" isn't enough bait to warrant another purchase, but this is a show worth hearing in whatever form it takes. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
When he left Mott the Hoople in 1974, Ian Hunter took Bowie sideman and late-era Hoople guitarist Mick Ronson with him, and further indulged the pub-rock-tinged, proto-new wave songwriting that made Hunter the MVP of his former band. His first solo outing featured the hit song "Once Bitten Twice Shy," which would be covered memorably by Great White a decade later. Hunter released well-crafted albums on a semi-regular basis throughout the '80s, '90s, and aughts, enjoying some FM hits and the continued respect of peers and younger artists, who appreciate the artist's deft blend of classic, rootsy melodicism with a slightly cock-eyed, punky point of view.
