Prior to the release of Love King, the-Dream declared the album would be his final solo release, but he later alluded to a possible fourth album. However his solo future plays out, Love King is the final chapter of the-Dream's "love" trilogy, following Love/Hate and Love vs Money. Issued as singles he penned for Justin Bieber ("Baby") and Ciara ("Ride") continue to ride high on the charts, the album is heralded by the triumphant title track and the sleek, low-profile "Make Up Bag," featuring T.I.
Rolling Stone (p.111) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] plush, pleasure-packed album on which the Atlanta singer-songwriter plays the hyperconfident Lothario..."
Spin - 4 stars out of 5 -- "As bawdy, referential, and effortless-sounding as ever, Terius 'The-Dream' Nash takes his long-playing love affair to the next level on this third solo effort..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.75) - "The slow-thumping '80s-R&B vibe suggests Prince is still a huge influence..." -- Grade: B
Billboard (p.28) - "[T]he 12-track set contains several of the-Dream's finest numbers yet....[With] 'Yamaha,' a spirited piece of Prince worship clearly inspired by 'Little Red Corvette.'"
Pitchfork (Website) - "If you've been charmed by The-Dream's strengths -- Tin Pan Alley song concepts and an unceasing sense of musical craft -- then you'll be immensely satisfied with the music here."
Uncut (magazine) (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is music an often be magnificent: an aural pavlova of sugar-spun synths and ambrosial harmonies."
The pen behind some of the late-2000s catchiest R&B jams (including Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)"), The-Dream parlayed that behind-the-scenes fame, easing into a soulful solo singing career by the decade's end. The ascent of The-Dream (born Terius Youngdell Nash) recalls a true Horatio Alger rags-to-riches story: a music fan as a child, he learned multiple instruments and honed his skill, and gained a reputation in the business selling song lyrics. The-Dream found a niche as the auto-tuner fad faded and the market boomed for old-fashioned urbane vocal craft a la Michael Jackson.
