Performer: They Might Be Giants
Distributor: Ryko Distribution Notes: A collection of original indie singles and 4 previously unreleased songs. They Might Be Giants: John Linnell, John Flansburgh. Additional personnel includes: Lt. Anne Moore (vocals); Peter Permain Thomson (background vocals). Producers include: They Might Be Giants, Bill Krauss. MISCELLANEOUS T is a collection of B-sides, single remixes and rarities that more or less span the period during which They Might Be Giant's first two albums appeared (their self-titled debut and LINCOLN). From the opening "Hey Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Has A Deal" to the final "Don't Let's Start," this is a dizzying array of hook-filled songs brimming with catchy absurdities. The duo of John Linnel and John Flansburgh created an incredible catalog of deceptively complex tunes during the second half of the '80s and this collection, along with the aforementioned first releases, tells the tale. This was all prior to their signing to a major label and many of the songs are imbued with an endearing quality of homemade (but never lo-fi) warmth. The three above-mentioned albums have also been collected together as the two-disc set THEN: THE EARLY YEARS.
John Flansburgh and John Linnell, the two singer/songwriters behind Brooklyn avant-pop cult band They Might Be Giants, were childhood friends who have been working under the TMBG banner since the '80s. The words "nerdy," "geek-rock," and "quirky" have been applied to their melodic, humor-filled songs so often there should be a cross-reference in the dictionary. Over their numerous albums with and without backing musicians (in the early days they used a drum machine) they've offered songs about the most unlikely subjects imaginable, from Belgian painter James Ensor to famed cinematic costume designer Edith Head. Their masterful songcraft is such that they've long maintained a healthy audience for their idiosyncratic sound.
