Notes: This 1988 debut effort from Oakland's venerable Tony Toni Tone includes the hits "Born Not to Know," as well as the trio's name-making commercial breakthrough "Little Walter." Considering that the album is cast largely at a breakneck pace, it's suitable that two of the last three tracks are ballads. The sultry "Pain" chronicles the emotional shrapnel cast by a love affair gone awry, while the closing "Not Gonna Cry For You" is spiced by a vintage '80s-era power ballad guitar solo. Though it favors R&B over a street-smart hip-hop edge, WHO? laid the groundwork for the trio's later full-fledged appropriation of New Jack Swing, a move that would lead to an explosion in popularity with Tony Toni Tone's next release, THE REVIVAL.
