Along with fellow Bahians like Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Maria Bethania, Caetano Veloso was one of the key figures in the tropicalismo movement that was the Brazilian equivalent of America's late-'60s countercultural revolution. While his '90s recordings ventured into the rarefied realm of artsong, his earlier material, as featured on this fine compilation, ranges from American-influenced pop-rock to gentle bossa nova (Joao Gilberto--yet another Bahian--was a big influence on Veloso's early work). Whether storming the barricades with an attack led by electric guitar and synthesizer, or subtly insinuating his sentiments via low-key, acoustic neo-bossa arrangements, Veloso frequently expressed his radical politics through his finely honed lyrics. At the time, Veloso's message was of equal import to his music, but decades later, even non-Brazilian ears can gain much just from the sound of Veloso's voice and the sophisticated structures of his music.
Caetano Veloso is a giant of Brazilian pop, often compared to figures such as Bob Dylan and John Lennon--even if the comparison doesn't quite translate. Veloso began in the late 1960s as one of the primary instigators of the "tropicalia" movement--an intentionally provocative collision of musical and cultural influences--for which he rapidly ascended to fame and notoriety. For years he was hardly known outside Brazil, but in time he became an international star renowned for his musical creativity and poetic soul.
