Performer: Caetano Veloso
Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: This title means "Without Handkerchief, Without Document". This Verve collection represents the diversity of Veloso's music, perhaps more so than the Tropicalia-heavy compilation A ARTE DE CAETANO VELOSO. Some of the late '60s classics such as "Soy Loco Por Ti, America" and "Superbacana" are included, as is material from the late '70s and early '80s. This CD travels from psychedelia-tinged samba to bossa nova to Brazilian new wave. The unifying element in all this diversity is the tranquil, conversational style of Caetano Veloso's excellent vocals, which owe a lot to Joao Gilberto. While some the synth-pop material featured here might raise an eyebrow, there are a lot of excellent songs featuring sparser arrangements, which perhaps make better use of Veloso's exceptional vocal ability. WITHOUT HANDKERCHIEF WITHOUT DOCUMENT... is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the first 10 years or so of Caetano Veloso's music.
Caetano Veloso is a giant of Brazilian pop, often compared to figures such as Bob Dylan and John Lennon--even if the comparison doesn't quite translate. Veloso began in the late 1960s as one of the primary instigators of the "tropicalia" movement--an intentionally provocative collision of musical and cultural influences--for which he rapidly ascended to fame and notoriety. For years he was hardly known outside Brazil, but in time he became an international star renowned for his musical creativity and poetic soul.
