The much-loved singer Vera Lynn is held in great esteem by British audiences because of her work in entertaining service personnel during World War II, earning her the nickname "the Forces Sweetheart." Her BBC radio series, Sincerely Yours, became a link between the girls "back home" and their men overseas, with Lynn reading personal messages and singing sentimental favorites such as "We'll Meet Again" and "The White Cliffs Of Dover." She returned to the U.K. variety circuit in 1947, and had several transatlantic hits, notably "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" (the first record by a U.K. artist to top the U.S. charts). Lynn continued to record regularly into the late 1960s, and to make sporadic live appearances into the 21st Century. In 2009, Lynn earned a new generation of fans whose support made the 92-year-old grand dame the oldest person in the history of the British charts to score a number one album.
