While touring with Sonic Youth as an opening act, Neil Young got to see much of their unorthodox use of feedback and sound that often drove Young's fans into the outer sanctums of the arenas the tour was hitting. Instead of getting mired in a generational rut, Young embraced the idea of experimenting with feedback/noise as an art form (his solos had often leaned in that direction anyway) and soon started incorporating the concept into his own sets. After numerous discussions with SY's Thurston Moore about the theories behind sound sculpting, Young wove together the pealing and clanging segments of several live shows into one continuous "instrumental" piece entitled ARC (which was packaged both separately and as part of the double-live WELD CD). Call it Neil Young's answer to METAL MACHINE MUSIC.
