Philadelphia's Boyz II Men are a vocal quartet steeped in a number of R&B and soul traditions. Not only do they have the sizable legacy of soul singers from the City of Brotherly Love to draw on for inspiration, they've also surpassed mentors Bell Biv Devoe as the premier Pop/R&B act in the land, filling the shoes of such dapper hit-makers as New Edition and The Jacksons. For II, their long-awaited sophomore effort, Boyz II Men (Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary, Nathan and Wanya Morris) rightfully abstained from fiddling with their distinctive vocal sound. Consequently, their harmonic interplay has never seemed more polished. Not only do they kindle soulful flames under pure romantic ballads like "I'll Make Love To You," but they are able to stake a claim to the Beatles' "Yesterday" by placing their own distinct vocal stamp on it. They can also just as easily kick their harmonies onto the dance floor. The Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis produced "All Around The World," with its funky French intro and Daddy-O samples, is a testament to that. The track also serves as further proof that in today's world of pop craftsmanship, Boyz II Men have all the bases covered.
Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.176) - "...Every bit as appealing as their fine first effort....There's...a capella candy that leaves no cloying aftertaste....II pushes the envelope...adding string-quartet grace notes here, jazz vocalese there." Entertainment Weekly (9/9/94, p.83) - "...No matter how noble the lyrics, the lush vocal and string arrangements suggest a deep-seated sensuality...the Boyz maintain their understated charm..." - Rating: A Q (11/94, p.109) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Aspirations to stretch beyond sweetness are implicit in the hardline approach and ensemble passion..."
While rap music was the music of choice on the urban charts and radio playlists by the late 1980s/early '90s, vocal group Boyz II Men re-introduced the merits of soul and contemporary R&B, laden with perfectly executed harmonies. The group became one of the most successful chart acts of the '90s, especially when their 1992 single, "The End of the Road," set the record for most weeks atop the Billboard charts, a record which they would subsequently reclaim in 1996 with the duet with Mariah Carey, "One Sweet Day."
