Photographer: Eazy-E. It's easy to lose track of EPs in the world of hip-hop: the sheer number of studio releases, not to mention mixtapes, remix albums, and compilations, creates something of a market overload. But overlooking this 1994 Bone Thugs-N-Harmony EP would be a mistake. Raw, innovative, surprising, and boasting quality production, CREEPIN ON AH COME UP packs a serious punch, even with only eight tracks. With Eazy-E and DJ Yella helping out with production (Eazy-E also raps on "Foe tha Love of Money"), the tracks are tasty, but it's the superb flows of core members that make this EP a classic.
Entertainment Weekly (10/7/94, p.76) - "...What sets these Cleveland rappers apart is a vocal style that deftly weds a brisk hardcore delivery with melodic, almost jazz-like complexity..." - Rating: B
The Source (9/94, p.99) - 3.5 Stars - Dope - "...the bottom line is that these brothers have quality lyrics underneath their novel approach to the mic..."
Proteges of the late Erick "Eazy-E" Wright, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony quickly found a mass audience for their unique style, a predecessor of the South's screwed up movement. With a combination of syrupy R&B harmonies with gang-banger imagery and double-time, tongue-twisting rhymes reminiscent of the East Coast raggamuffin style, the five Bones (each of whom would have solo careers) earned their place in the hip-hop pantheon. "Tha Crossroads," a rare and elegiac ballad on death and the hood, became one of the biggest pop hits of the 1990s.
