In a year that saw a load of formidable hip-hop debuts, Keith Murray's MOST BEAUTIFULLEST THING IN THIS WORLD stands out like a well-versed diamond amidst a pile of coal. The difference between Murray, who first presented his style as a guest on Erick Sermon's "Hostile," and other MCs is his aberrant, morphous vocabulary that constantly invents and re-invents the rapper's language: "My vocabulation is out of your imagination" is how he describes his signature flow on "Dip Dip Di." Backed throughout by Sermon's hard, funk-influenced production, Murray kicks his distinctive rhymes with the confidence of a veteran--knowing when to drop his complex poetry upon the listener, and when to step off and let some of his Def Squad homies (the aforementioned Sermon, Redman and Hurricane Gee, among others) have a go at it. In fact, on the chorus of the album's title cut, a massive jeep-hit from the summer of 1994, you can hear the rest of Murray's supporting cast step away and egg his "word-attack skills" on, aware that they're in the presence of a unique lyrical mastermind.
Spin (2/95, p.75) - Highly Recommended - "...Murray is completely obsessed with language; the way words fight or make love, the way language can be deconstructed in the name of his neighborhood, the many ways he can freak metaphors up against a wall. He clips words when brevity is necessary, extends them a syllable or so where the rhythm requires..." The Source (1/95, p.90) - 4 Stars - Slammin' - "...in a hip-hop market grown stale, Keith is an imaginative shining star...[THE MOST BEAUTIFULLEST THING IN THIS WORLD] is imbued with that bi-coastal flavor heads want to hear..." NME (Magazine) (2/25/95, p.41) - 7 - Very Good - "...gives new meaning to the expression `getting busy.' His lyrics are all over the place, dropping into the spaces in between the beats as often as landing on top of them....He plays with grammar, syntax, rhyme and alliteration, demanding frequent use of the rewind button if you want to keep up..."
