Performer: Marian McPartland
Producer: Shari Hutchinson Distributor: IDN Distribution Notes: /Rosemary Clooney. Personnel: Marian McPartland (piano); Rosemary Clooney (vocals). Recorded on October 14, 1991. Includes liner notes by Chris Albertson. Rosemary Clooney's appearance on Marian McPartland's famous radio show Piano Jazz has some good music and plenty of lively conversation. Clooney talks about her beginnings, she and McPartland discuss such people as Mitch Miller, Billy Strayhorn, and Cole Porter, and there is plenty of mutual good feeling. Musically, there is only around 20 minutes of music (three piano solos by McPartland and four Clooney vocals, including "My Shining Hour," and a touching version of "September Song") so -- although enjoyable -- this CD is not essential. ~ Scott Yanow
JazzTimes (6/03, pp.120-1) - "...Clooney spins delightful tales....It's a rare delight to hear her sing with just piano accompaniment..."
British jazz pianist Marian McPartland is a beloved musical institution whose performing roots date back to the WWII years in Europe. She has also been an important disseminator and educator, whose radio program PIANO JAZZ is the longest-running series on NPR. A highly sensitive pianist who has never stopped appreciating and assimilating new ideas, McPartland has a highly diverse range of tastes and passions, not to mention a series of consistently beautiful albums which span the last three decades of the 20th century and into the 21st.
