Notes: Covering Lady T's five-album run for Epic -- 1983's Robbery through 1990's Ivory -- Playlist: The Very Best of Teena Marie contains only six of the 14 charting R&B singles from it. Several of those missing cuts, such as "Fix It," "Midnight Magnet," "Lips to Find You," "Work It," and "Here's Looking at You," were not lower rung, either, peaking in the Top 40. While the compilation demonstrates the depth of Marie's albums, including fan favorites like "Casanova Brown" and "My Dear Mr. Gaye," too many highlights are missing to make for an ideal summary of Marie's post-Gordy, pre-independent years. (For some unknown reason, Sony licensed the title track from Marie's 1980 Gordy album, Irons in the Fire, as well as a track from the 2009 Stax release Congo Square.) ~ Andy Kellman

California-born R&B singer Teena Marie started out on Motown Records in the '70s, where she was matched up with labelmate Rick James on her debut album. Her blend of pop, funk, and R&B caught on quickly, and here move into disco/dance wasn't far off. Her greatest success, though, came in the '80s after a much-publicized legal battle with Motown and a subsequent move to Epic, for whom she recorded her huge R&B/Dance hit "Lovergirl."
