Portraits is a three-disc, 61-track box set covering Emmylou Harris' entire career for Reprise and Warner Records, which spans from 1974 to 1992. Not only does the box select highlights from classic albums like Luxury Liner, Roses in the Snow, and Blue Kentucky Girl, but it also features her early duets with Gram Parsons and selections from the Trio album she recorded with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Portraits doesn't dwell too long on unreleased material -- there are only five unearthed tracks on the entire set -- preferring to sketch out a full overview of her career. While there might be a few favorite tracks missing, the box nevertheless fulfills its goals quite nicely -- anyone looking for a comprehensive compilation of Emmylou's career will not be disappointed. ~ Thom Owens
Rolling Stone (12/26/96, p.189) - "...moves gracefully from groundbreaking duets with Gram Parsons to her subtle treatment of songs by writers as diverse as Stephen Foster and Bruce Springsteen. For all of the dulcet, stand-alone clarity of her soprano, Harris sounds best in harmony..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/20/96, p.77) - "...A perfect introduction to a maverick who has chosen quality over trends and kept the heart of authentic country music beating." - Rating: A
Q (4/97, p.137) - 5 Stars (out of 5) - "...this is a truly comprehensive compilation, Harris's emotive range on these well-chosen songs simply breathtaking."
Emmylou Harris first came to public attention as Gram Parsons's singing partner, but her solo career took off after his passing. Throughout the 1970s and '80s, she was a major force in progressive country, championing the works of great songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Paul Siebel. By the '90s, the eclecticism that she'd always practiced came to full bloom in the hands of producer Daniel Lanois, especially on her milestone 1995 album, WRECKING BALL.
