One of the early feathers in the cap of the Bad Boy Entertainment empire, the female trio Total got their start backing the Notorious B.I.G. before releasing their self-titled debut in 1996. Unlike the sleek urban contemporary sound of acts like Destiny's Child, Total was driven by classic funk grooves and sassy attitude. The singers, Kima, Keisha, and Pam, each have their own distinctive style, and that variety adds a pleasing twist to TOTAL. While the album isn't consistent throughout, it does have highlights, with "No One Else" and "Can't You See" (which features Biggie), among them. Funky, slinky, and sensual, TOTAL is a solid R&B album that deserves more attention than it's received since its release.
Entertainment Weekly (3/15/96, p.65) - "...Brimming with irresistibly funky loops and gritty grooves, the album is a pleasure from start to finish..." - Rating: A- Vibe (5/96, p.122) - "...Total's self-titled disc overcomes the questionable vocal talents of Kima, Keisha and Pam with super-slick production and catchy hooks..."
Signed to Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy record label, the female trio Total first grabbed the spotlight when their vocal talents graced such Notorious B.I.G. hits as "One More Chance" and "Juicy." Their self-titled 1996 debut launched several hits as well, namely "No One Else," "Kissin' You," and "Do You Think About Us?"
